Clint Bowyer on Top After Wild Talladega Finish

Clint BowyerIn one of the most unusual finishes in NASCAR history, Clint Bowyer did his winner's burnout Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway even before he knew he won the race.

NASCAR had to go to the electronic timing and scoring computers as well as video tapes to determine that Bowyer had won the race by virtue of being in front of Richard Childress Racing teammate Kevin Harvick when a crash occurred on the last lap, freezing the field in place at the moment of the yellow flag.

"I didn't even know the caution was coming out," Bowyer told ESPN after the race. "As soon as (a team member) mentions caution, I looked over and thought, 'Am in in the lead?' I thought I was."

It took officlals at least three minutes to make the call, and Bowyer spent some of the time doing a burnout before getting the good news.

Wasn't he jumping the gun? "No way," Bowyer said. "I was going to claim the win right off the bat. Let 'em take it from me. I'm not going to give it to 'em."

Harvick was second, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya, David Reutimann and Joey Logano.

It was a miracle finish for Harvick, who had smashed the front end of his car into the side of Marcos Ambrose's spinning car earlier the race. But Harvick managed to stay on the lead lap while his crew used tape, among other things, to try to effect repairs to the front end. Somehow the repairs did the trick, and Harvick was at the front at the end.

Nascar Racing At Its Finest

Some people believe that the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing has organized its racing events to provide some of the best NASCAR racing excitement that any fan could ever possibly hope to have in a lifetime. Some of the racing events that are organized involve truck racing, but by far, the stock car races in the Winston Cup challenge are NASCAR racing choices that are truly fine.

People can choose to visit the NASCAR Racing Museum and see the history of NASCAR in living color. The entire facility is designed to look like a NASCAR racetrack and fans are definitely thrilled beyond belief from the second they enter this prestigious facility. The fans see NASCAR racing memorabilia at its best and get to see the automobile that was driven by the Winston Cup leader.

Some fans think that a particular racetrack provides some of the finest NASCAR racing in the world. The entire complement of race cars are true exhibits of the quality and craftsmanship that go into making the NASCAR racing machine that circles the racetrack during racing season. As the rows of cars build with each lap, some fans agree that nothing in life could ever replace the thrill of all that excitement.

There is some NASCAR racing fans that are totally devoted to the colorful graphics on certain race cars. They think that when they see their favorite colors in the pole position, that they are experiencing some of the finest accomplishments that their NASCAR driver has shown to them thus far in his racing career. When that driver goes on to win the race, they will definitely think that they had a chance to see NASCAR racing at its very best.

The devotion that fans display week after week is evidence of their love for NASCAR racing. Even if a driver they admire has a bad week and fails to qualify for a race due to engine or mechanical failures, these fans still stand true and back their driver because they think that he is definitely the best driver in NASCAR history, just not that week.

Feel confident though that those fans will return the following week to see the finest racing done by their driver and they will look for them in the winners circle at the end of the race. If they fail to see them in the winner's circle, you can be sure that they will be able to find an image of the driver attached to some memorable Nascar souvenir that will serve to remind fans of the marvelous time that they had at one of the finest stock car races in the world.

Your classic grand prix - race 17

It is a first for classic Formula 1 this week - a father and son victory double bill featuring Gilles and Jacques Villeneuve.

In a break from the normal tradition, we have decided to broadcast extended highlights of two of last week's five choices - the 1996 Portuguese Grand Prix and the 1979 South African Grand Prix.

The Portuguese race - the last one at the Estoril circuit, one of the more enjoyable stops on the F1 calendar in the 1990s - was won by Jacques Villeneuve as he sought to beat Williams team-mate Damon Hill to the world championship.

Villeneuve failed in that quest as Hill was crowned champion at the subsequent race in Japan, but Villeneuve's superb win in Portugal kept the title race alive to that final grand prix of the season.

This race was the most popular choice among respondents on this blog last week - and with good reason. Villeneuve drove probably the greatest race of his F1 career to make up the ground lost by a poor start and a delay behind Ferrari's Michael Schumacher in the early laps and overhaul Hill.

The win was made possible by a brilliant overtaking move - one of the best of the 1990s, and possibly ever - on Schumacher around the outside of Estoril's banked, 150mph final corner.

Inspired by this, Villeneuve then made up 15 seconds on Hill, partly with the help of traffic, partly by simply being faster on the day, and passed him at the third and final pit stops for a brilliant victory.

The classic races will be shown on the red button on interactive television in the UK from 1800 Wednesday 20 October to 1300 on Friday 22, although they will not be broadcast between 1600 and 1900 on Thursday. They will not be broadcast on Freeview.

There is no question that Portugal 1996 was an exciting race, and a stirring drive by Villeneuve but, in my opinion, it was eclipsed by his father Gilles's victory in South Africa 17 years previously.

This was the second most popular race among respondents on this blog and we feel the strongest contender, so we have decided to broadcast the full 'Grand Prix' programme from that race, too. It is embedded below.

I went into the details of this race last week; suffice it to say here that a stop to change tyres dropped Villeneuve Sr 30 seconds behind his Ferrari team-mate Jody Scheckter. The Canadian made up the deficit in just 33 laps, then forced the South African into a mistake and went on to take a brilliant win.

It was the first of many stunning drives by Villeneuve in 1979, a season which he started as the junior partner to Scheckter at Ferrari.

Thanks to consistency, the judicious application of team orders in the decisive race, and some critical errors by the still-inexperienced Villeneuve, Scheckter ended the year as world champion, as had been his and Ferrari's aim when they signed him.

By then, though, Villeneuve ended it established as not only the fastest driver at Ferrari, but in the world - a position he maintained until his death three years later.

NASCAR Tracks-The Bristol Motor Speedway

Bristol Motor Speedway, as a half-mile oval with the steepest banking on the NASCAR circuit, is sometimes referred to as "The Toilet Bowl". When the cars line up for the starting flag, they often stretch nearly halfway around the short track. As a result, Bristol is known for its "paint swapping," and races tend to include numerous accidents and caution flags. Bristol Speedway is the last circular track on the NASCAR circuit to install the barrier system. The installation was delayed at Bristol while engineers determined how to install the walls over the track's gates. Bristol Motor Speedway, aside from being an excellent track loaded with potentially wild twists, seems to ooze a sense of brotherhood and awe among the lucky ones with Bristol NASCAR tickets. This year's Nextel Cup and Busch (now the Sprint and the Nationwide) Series will have race fans rushing out to buy tickets, among others, all eager to see their favorite race to victory.

Bristol Motor Speedway has been an integral part of auto racing since 1961. The short track makes for slower speeds, but that is offset by the high banking of the turns at Bristol, a challenging aspect like no other track on the NASCAR circuit.

Race Week at Bristol (BMS) is not just a normal week not only for the people who work there but for the fans as well. When you attend a race at Bristol it's not just go check out the race and that's it. Racers love concrete because it provides a ton of grip and less tire wear than asphalt. Fans love Bristol because no matter which of the 160,000 seats you get, you can see the whole track. Race enthusiasts here did better than that, allowing the wave to continue nearly a half-dozen times after hearing they had set the record.

Bristol has purchased property and developed satellite parking lots on Hwy 11-E. Fees are charged for tent and motor home camping at the Bristol Dragway. Bristol Motor Speedway could very easily have opened in 1961 under a different name. The original plan was to build in Piney Flats which is 5 miles down the road from Bristol but the idea met local opposition. Otherwise we might have been visiting the Piney Flats Speedway. In the end the speedway was constructed in Bristol on land that was once a dairy farm.

Juan Pablo Montoya Wins Talladega Pole

Juan Pablo Montoya has captured the pole position for Sunday's AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega Superspeedway with a lap of 184.640 miles per hour.

It was Montoya's third pole of the year. He also won the top starting spots at New Hampshire and Indianapolis in July.

"We always run really good here," Montoya said afterwards. "We always have good race cars. Right now, (we'll) get ourselves a good pit stall for the race and then see what happens. We'll be ok. Talladega is more about how the car is going to be in the draft and everything. We came with the same thing we had here in the spring, we ran really well. Both (Earnhardt Ganassi) cars ran really well."

Clint Bowyer won the second starting spot with a lap of 184.498 mph. Kurt Busch was third, followed by the unlikely Joe Nemechek and Jeff Gordon.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified sixth, followed by some other lesser-ranked drivers, including Dave Blaney in seventh, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Sam Hornish Jr.

Nascar And The FX Race Technology

With the coming of engineering in the 21st century, reality television has made the front seat. As more and more proficiencies are formulated to make TV more interactional and advanced, sporting events are not left far behind. Nascar has started the race F/X technology, which has enhanced the interest further amongst TV audiences. Well, the technology was primitively started by FOX, which started trailing the hockey puck on national television. The trick was hot, and it became an instant hit.

Nascar brought in a synonymous technology to track their cars. But tracking a puck on a hockey field and tracking a car moving at 200 mph on a racing circuit are two different matters entirely. In Nascar, the commentators talk about a car and then the car is spotlighted with a glowing halo around it. It looks incredibly cool on television. The Technology Behind The Trick
Race F/X uses a wide range of parameters to showcase their final product. GPS orbiters form an integral component of the Race F/X technology. They are used to dig up the cars as they move around the circuit. They work in tandem with an earth-based navigation system. The tracking is so accurate that the car is tracked up to 20 millimeters distance from its real position.

In-car sensing elements in the cars also play a important part in enhancing the telecasted event. They help the GPS locate the cars and also help the networks to collect as much statistical data about the car as possible. The info is highly detailed and contains minute contingents like RPM, acceleration, speed, fuel consumption, and even braking. This information is gathered at the speed of ten times a second. So you can rest assured that it is most recent information that you see on top of your favorite Nascar cars.

You Will Be In It

Spotter's Stand: Jeff Gordon vs. Kurt Busch Tops Martinsville Drama

Maybe this is what NASCAR's Robin Pemberton had in mind in January when his "Have at it, boys" line became the buzz phrase of the 2010 season.

In fact, it may have been even better.

Sunday at Martinsville, Va., couldn't have been scripted more perfectly in terms of drivers leaving the .526-mile bullring irritated with each other and how the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship battle is setting up with four races to go.

Oh, and some guy named Dale Earnhardt Jr. managed to have the South Central Virginia crowd roaring for the 90 laps he led -- the most he's paced all season.

But Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch -- personalities who have little crossover appeal within their separate fan bases -- provided the most interesting episode.

Gordon's most recent history with Busch came a quarter-lap before the ultimate payback, but their past history this season includes a cut tire on Busch's No. 2 that left him steamed at Gordon after finishing 32nd on the Infineon road course in June.
