Webber battling rivals and critics

Go on, admit it. How many of you were tipping Mark Webber for the 2010 world championship at the start of the year?

Hugely popular, massively likeable, a sports nut who's as happy to shoot the breeze about Didier Drogba, Lance Armstrong or Ricky Ponting as he is to talk about Fernando Alonso, Adrian Newey or Bernie Ecclestone.

But Jenson Button's successor as the next Formula 1 champion? Alonso, Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel maybe, but not the 34-year-old Australian who had only won his first grand prix in 2009.

With three races remaining, however, which driver has led the most laps this season, led the championship for the most races and currently enjoys the biggest points advantage over his four rivals he has had all season?

F1 has learned this year how much this one-time Minardi backmarker has been under-estimated.

Webber himself would never tell you that because it's not his style to blow his own trumpet. Action not words is how he chooses to operate.

But he's well aware that this could be his one and only chance of emulating fellow countrymen Sir Jack Brabham - his father Alan's motor-racing idol - and Alan Jones in achieving motorsport's highest honour.

And he knows there are plenty of people waiting to see if he really is made of the right stuff to withstand the pressure from the more recognised contenders - his team-mate Vettel, Ferrari's Alonso and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button - and make it a hat-trick of Australian champions.

To the doubters, the last two races showed that Webber had lost the mid-season momentum that had propelled him so forcefully to the front of the grid.

They believe they detect that the balance of power within Red Bull has shifted significantly towards Vettel.

Singapore and Japan were both labelled as Red Bull-friendly tracks but Vettel came out on top of the in-house battle.

The German out-qualified Webber at both circuits, and then out-scored him in both races.

The nightmare for Webber is that if Vettel beats him into second place here in Korea and again in Brazil, the pair would be tied on points heading into the final event in Abu Dhabi but Vettel would lead the title race for the first time this season because he would have won five races to Webber's four.

And, say the Webber doubters with a note of triumph, remember that Vettel won at Yas Marina last year.

So, they say, it's the dream ticket for Red Bull, then - the team's star young driver will graduate to become F1 champion.

None of this is new to Webber, nor will it cut any ice with him. He needs no reminding of his challenge.

This is a man whose website records his greatest achievement in motorsport so far as "getting into Formula 1 because the odds were stacked against us".

To emphasise the point, he's taken inspiration this week from a book, Don't Die With The Music On.

Written by one of Australia's most successful rugby league coaches, Wayne Bennett, it's all about making the most of your potential.

While preparing back home in Australia last week, he also spent time with two Aussie sporting greats, Ponting and Pat Rafter.

If Webber had heard Michael Schumacher talking about him on Thursday, he would probably have nodded in agreement.

"He has improved massively," said the seven-time champion in a BBC interview.

"Looking at his results, the way he drives and his consistency, I'm very much impressed with him."

"You'd rather be ahead than be behind."

Webber's team-mate at Williams during the 2005 season, Nick Heidfeld, is another who has noticed how his performances have stepped up this year.

The five championship contenders pose in Korea ahead of this weekend's grand prix. Photo: Getty

"He's made a good improvement in his racing because he was already strong in qualifying," said Heidfeld.

"If you look at the guys in the championship, he's done the least amount of mistakes. He seems to cope well with the pressure. He's doing a really good job and I'd still back him (for the title)."

Ah yes, pressure.

The charge that Webber cannot handle it was levelled at him after his ragged performance in Australia, where he ended up crashing into Lewis Hamilton.

His mistake off pole position in the next race in Malaysia to let Vettel through on the inside of the first corner - the move that decided the race in Vettel's favour - was picked on as another example of his fragility when the heat was on.

But Webber will tell you himself that he needed no public dressing down. He knew he'd got things wrong, and his results since then have proved the point.

Apart from that terrifying high-flying accident in Valencia when he misjudged his distance to Heikki Kovalainen - his only retirement this year - he's made none of the errors that have afflicted Vettel, Alonso and Hamilton.

Webber's team boss, Christian Horner, has been quick to reject criticism that Webber's been feeling the pressure of the run-in like Jenson Button did last year.

"You never saw Jenson on the podium in the second half of the season," Horner said.
"Mark, though, has been consistently running at the front. He has the character, like Sebastian, to deal with the situation."

Much might be read into Webber's spin in second practice in Korea. But he explained it calmly as a balance issue on the softer tyre and then proceeded to set the fastest time.

"We're in the hunt, mate," was his succinct summary of his track debut in Korea.

But he appreciates that he must check Vettel's resurgence, and the sooner the better.

"I win the next two races, it's all over. I'm doing my best then hopefully the rest will take care of itself," he said on Thursday, well aware of what his 14-point advantage means.

Vettel has admitted he's felt much more comfortable in the car since new software was installed to enable smoother power delivery through the double diffuser to accelerate out of corners.

It means that Webber has lost the little edge over his team-mate that he'd previously enjoyed when it was more driver-reliant.

Now he has to dig deeper again to repeat the sort of qualifying fliers that earned him pole in Spain, Monaco and Spa, thereby putting pressure on his team-mate to do the chasing and the overtaking which doesn't always seem to come naturally to him.

Red Bull insist both drivers will receive equal backing as they home in on the constructors' championship which they could clinch for the first time this weekend if they take another one-two finish and McLaren fail to score.

As far as the drivers' title goes, Webber will take nothing for granted after so much misfortune in previous years.

Always learning, always improving is another of his mottos.

Clint Bowyer Says NASCAR Penalty Helped in Hidden Ways

Can anything be good about a championship-crippling, 150-point penalty to begin the Chase for the Sprint Cup, as Clint Bowyer and his team received after winning the first playoff race back on Sept. 19?

As a matter of fact, yes, Bowyer said Tuesday, and his explanation had the ring of authenticity -- like perhaps the team really did discover the veritable silver lining to their cloud.

Bowyer's win at Talladega Sunday all but swept away the remnants of the cloud. He's the only Chase driver with two victories in the playoffs, and the nightmare of NASCAR's sanctions will further fade into bad memories when his crew chief, Shane Wilson, returns to action this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway after serving a four-race suspension.

"Truth be told, I think it's been good for all of us," Bowyer said on the weekly NASCAR teleconference. "It's opened our eyes to a couple things that we've been missing, you know. The communication side of it on race day is one, I think."

Bowyer said the interim crew chief, Scott Miller, was a steady hand in the pit box.

British GP: Vettel takes pole as Red Bull dominate

Sebastian Vettel grabbed pole position for the second year in a row at Silverstone, as the Milton Keynes-based team secured its fifth front-row lockout of the season. Vettel beat his team mate Mark Webber by 0.143s. Fernando Alonso will start tomorrow's race on second row of the grid for Ferrari.

Jenson Button in his McLaren had a disastrous session. He will start his home grand prix from 14th place after missing the cut for the top-10 shootout.

In Q1

Heikki Kovalainen was the best of the new team drivers in 19th. His Lotus team mate Jarno Trulli will start from 21st position. Seems like the Virgins have made a step forward with the new updates as Timo Glock managed to split the two Lotuses.

Sakon Yamamoto who will take the place of Bruno Senna in HRT for the British Gran Prix, was last of all. He was half a second down on his team mate Karun Chandhok.

Driver from the established team unable to get into Q2 was Jaime Alguersuari who qualified 18th.

Drivers eliminated in Q1

19. Heikki Kovalainen Lotus-Cosworth 1m 34.405s

21. Jarno Trulli Lotus-Cosworth 1m 34.864s
22. Lucas di Grassi Virgin-Cosworth 1m 35.212s
23. Karun Chandhok HRT-Cosworth 1m 36.546s
24. Sakon Yamamoto HRT-Cosworth 1m 36.968s

In Q2

Local hero, Jenson Button could only manage 14th fastest time in his McLaren. Button radioed in that he was struggling with low grip at the rear.

McLaren was on the back foot going into qualifying after having to shelve the exhaust-blown diffuser it tried in Friday practice, which it found upset the MP4-25?s balance. Thus the team abandoned the key element of its planned car upgrade and reverted to the old specification rear end on the MP4-25.

Somewhat bewildered by the sudden downturn in performance Button said, ?This morning the car felt really good. I personally think there?s something wrong, the car was undriveable. That?s it really. I don?t know if I?ve lost rear downforce since this morning, but it?s pretty undriveable. This weekend has been tricky, but that wasn?t normal.?

Also failing to make it beyond Q2 was Adrian Sutil who has for most part been a regular in the final Q3 shootout, but alas not at Silverstone on the doorstep of the Force India team?s headquarters. His team mate Vitantonio Liuzzi fared worse and will start from 15th on the grid.

Vettel was quicker in the first knockout session while Webber had the edge in Q2.

Drivers eliminated in Q2
11. Adrian Sutil Force India-Mercedes 1m 31.399s
12. Kamui Kobayashi BMW Sauber-Ferrari 1m 31.421s
13. Nico Hulkenberg Williams-Cosworth 1m 31.635s

16. Vitaly Petrov Renault-Renault 1m 31.796s
17. Sebastien Buemi Toro Rosso-Ferrari 1m 32.012s

In Q3

It was the battle of the Bulls for the top position and Vettel got the better of it. This result put Red Bull on pole for the ninth time out of ten Grands Prix this season.

Webber was the first to set a Q3 time and logged a 1m29.758s, easily the fastest lap of the new Silverstone layout up to that point ? but moments later Vettel stopped the clocks in 1m29.695s.

Webber was unable to respond on his second run so Vettel?s pole was secure, but that didn?t stop the young German shaving another few hundredths off his own benchmark just to emphasise who had the upper hand.

His final time of 1m29.615s represented an average speed of 147mph for the revised 3.7-mile circuit, almost identical to the average he recorded on the previous layout in last year?s low-fuel Q2 session.

Fernando Alonso finished third for Ferrari and will share second row of the grid with his nemesis Lewis Hamilton.

Pedro de la Rosa qualified an excellent ninth, his first top-10 grid placing of his F1 comeback season. He qualified ahead of Mercedes' Michael Schumacher.

Only a mishap (such as a broken nosecone which Sebastian Vettel suffered in practice) is likely to prevent a Red Bull victory

British GP: "Number Two" driver, Webber takes perfect win

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2dCclIT9q8/TDoZtx-GvoI/AAAAAAAAGeo/YDiUctgxgWg/s1600/Webber+takes+perfect+win.jpg

July 11 '10

Mark Webber won his first British Grand Prix in style. ?Not bad for a number two driver? radioed Webber to his race engineer after the end of the race.

Lewis Hamilton finished second for Mclaren in front of his home crowd, while Mercedes' Nico Rosberg bagged third.

The Race in brief
Webber overtook his teammate Sebastian Vettel at the start, with the latter experiencing a tyre puncture only seconds later. While the German had to make a short trip to the pits for a new set of tyres, Webber increased his lead from Lewis Hamilton in front of the pack.

Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso had another start to forget, losing 2 spots and dropping to 5th place after the first few corners. He slightly touched his teammate Felipe Massa?s car while trying to defend his position, causing the Brazilian's right rear tyre to burst. Massa then visited the pits and returned to the track in 23rd place.

Although only a couple of seconds separated Webber and Hamilton in front, the trailing group, headed by Renault?s Robert Kubica, dropped no less than 20 seconds to the leading duo until the first round of pit stops. After each driver went to the pits to get new tyres, Webber emerged once again in front of the field, ahead of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg (who passed Kubica thanks to a great team work in the pit lane).

Alonso tried to pass the Pole himself in order not to lose contact with the Top 3 positions, but shortcut a chicane while pushed by Kubica out of bounds ? and passing the Renault driver ? which later got him a drive-through penalty from the stewards. Just when he was about to make his drive-though run, the safety car was deployed due to debris coming out of Pedro de la Rosa?s car. His rear wing practically disintegrated in the start/finish straight, as there was a slight contact between him and Adrian Sutil on the pit straight.

The Spaniard was forced to make his pit lane run when the SC went in, which dropped him to 16 overall.

In front of the field, Webber had no problem maintaining his 1st place in front of Hamilton, while Rosberg did the same in front of the second McLaren driver Jenson Button. The reigning world champion had a wonderful start and climbed all the way to 7th place (from 14th on the grid) after a few laps, which he later turned into 4th place after a good pit stop strategy (added Alonso?s penalty).

Webber the ?Number Two? Driver
Prior to the Saturday qualifying, the Austrian team decided to take the front wing of Webber?s RB6 and hand it to Vettel, resulting in the German driving to pole position in Q3. While obviously furious with the decision, Webber kept his cool and decided to deliver the response on track, winning his first British GP in career and becoming the winningest F1 driver this season (to date).

?Not bad for a number two driver,? Webber told his race engineer via radio at the end of the race, hinting that what happened in Silverstone will still haunt him from now on.

At the press conference after the race, Webber continued to voice his frustrations, insisting that he would have never signed a one-year extension with Red Bull had he known he will be treated the way he was in the UK.

?Yesterday was really a unique situation, and it was the first time we had one bit. I would never have signed a contract for next year if I believed that was the way going forward. I was disappointed. We will see how it goes in the future, I will keep doing what I am doing and I hope it is enough.?

?I have had a few hurdles in my career, sometimes privately as well, so I think you can judge a person's character by how they come back from adversity. Some drivers have that, I've had a bit more than others. It can work but obviously it is not how long is a piece of string - you have to make sure it is not constantly happening because it can test you too much but if the balance is right it can put some fuel on the fire,? added Webber.

The Race as it happened via James Allen
Heading to Hockenheim in two weeks time, Lewis Hamilton leads the drivers championship with 145 points. His team mate Jenson Button is second in the standings with 133 points and Mark Webber climbs to third with 128 points.

Elliott Sadler Wins Texas Pole

Elliott Sadler, who has been plagued by misfortune all year and will join the Nationwide series fulltime next year, had an end-of-the-season boost Friday when he won the pole position for the AAA Texas 500.

Sadler captured the top starting spot with a lap of 195.397 miles per hour at the ultrafast 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway.

In a Sprint Cup field usually separated by the tiniest margins, Sadler was more than two miles per hour and two tenths of a second faster than Biffle, and even faster than everyone else.

"That is a really fast lap for me. I got all I can get out of it," Sadler said after his run.

Greg Biffle, a Chase for the Sprint Cup competitor, qualified second at 193.653 mph. Carl Edwards was third at 193.646 mph, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya at 193.749 mph. David Ragan was fifth at 193.424.

Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton in Shoving Match After Texas Crash

Jeff GordonIn a rare outburst of anger, four-time NASCAR Cup champion Jeff Gordon got out of his wrecked race car, crossed the Texas Motor Speedway track and walked up to the other driver involved in the accident, Jeff Burton, and shoved the fellow veteran before NASCAR officials could separate the two drivers.

The accident happened just as a caution flag flew on lap 192 of the 334-lap Sprint Cup Series race for a one-car incident involving Martin Truex Jr. elsewhere on track. Gordon and Burton had been racing hard for 18th place prior to the yellow flag and Gordon pulled his No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet alongside Burton's Chevy as the field slowed to show his displeasure with Burton.

Burton said he was just trying to pull back up alongside Gordon and motion an apology and then -- as he saw it -- the two cars just became entangled.

"I honestly don't know what happened, but it's 100 percent my fault,'' Burton said. "I pulled up to let him know he was right and I don't blame him for being mad.''

That mea culpa wasn't good enough for Gordon, who was still peeved when interviewed next to his team transporter moments later.

"I was walking toward him and thankfully had a long walk because I did the least amount of what I wanted to do to him,'' Gordon said. "I was real upset and let's just say, I held back. I didn't want to be in an ambulance with him, I can tell you that.

Canadian GP: Hamilton all set for qualifying as he goes fastest in P3

Lewis Hamilton was the fastest driver in his McLaren in the final practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix with his best time of 1m16.058s which was 0.3 of a second faster than the Red Bull of Mark Webber in second position.

As if the track wasn't slippery enough, overnight showers made track conditions even worse at the beginning of the session. Halfway through the session the track became almost dry and Hamilton set his fastest time of the weekend on the super-soft tyres that nobody could match.

According to iTV, "In the middle part of the session Button had briefly traded fastest times with his McLaren team-mate Hamilton, before the younger Briton took command with a 1m16.259s lap at the 40-minute mark.

"Even though it was set on the harder prime tyre, that time remained unbeaten when the field switched to the super-soft options in the closing stages ? except by Hamilton himself, who moved the benchmark to 1m16.058s."

Sebastian Vettel was fifth quickest in the second Red Bull and was on target to improve when Lucas di Grassi spun his Virgin at the Casino hairpin with just a minute left on the clocks and brought out the yellow flags.

Apart from Grassi, there were few others who also had a close shave. Felipe Massa brushed the wall at the exit of turn seven and sparks flew from the front side of his Ferrari with no major damage. Hamilton also brushed the barriers coming out of turn four after setting the quickest time of the session.

Nico Rosberg managed just 4 laps during the dying stages of the practice session as his Mercedes was being tended by the pit crew with a clutch problem. Hispania's Karun Chandhok missed the entire session as his car stopped at the pit exit due to gearbox problem.
