Nascar And The Critique It Faces

Nascar has faced a lot of criticism for a lot of things over the last few decades. We can attribute the criticism to the popularity of Nascar. Apart from the environmental impact of Nascar which has led to criticism, there are other technical reasons as well. One of the reasons is the oval shape of most Nascar racing circuits. Driving enthusiasts have severely criticized the difficulty of these race courses when compared to the extremely difficult twisting and turning race courses of Formula 1. They say that it involves going round and round for 500 miles and nothing else.

Some courses of the Formula 1 put up to 5 or 6 G's of stress on the body of the driver. This is totally absent in Nascar. But Nascar has denied these allegations and countered by saying that there are certain race series in which road courses are included. But again it is for a very small percentage of the race. Nascar has also brought to light the fact that even the Indy racing league uses mostly oval tracks.

The Grueling Season
The grueling racing season of Nascar is also a reason for its criticism. While a Formula 1 race has 22 cars in its beginning, a Nascar Nextel cup race has 43. Add the 36 point races for the entire series, and the session becomes extremely hectic. The drivers are left with just a few hours to practice. Some of the drivers have even quit the sport because of their inability to cope with such stress.

Drivers who have been reasonably successful in road racing circuits have been unable to duplicate that success record in Nascar. The prime reason is the difference in the entire structure of the two.

The Cars
The technology behind the cars is another reason that Nascarhas faced so much criticism. The cars are mostly fitted with accessories from the 1950s. The carburetors, cast iron engine blocks and most primarily the use of leaded fuel have triggered huge criticism against Nascar. The reluctance of Nascar to add safety devices has also aggravated the criticism against them. The use of this equipment places more emphasis on getting an undue advantage rather than focusing on the skill of the driver.

The Business
The last thing that has received flak from critics is the Nascar business structure. The majority of revenue generated by the entire Nascar racing goes towards the France family, as they control most of Nascar . Many say that the drivers do not have a voice in Nascar and it is like a dictatorship. The penalties and fines that Nascar levied on its drivers for using foul language in the media have also been a reason for criticism against it.

Massa could still have key role to play in F1 title race

Felipe Massa could not have made his intentions for this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix any clearer.

"I expect to win the race," he said after arriving at Interlagos on Thursday. "I see myself taking points from other drivers who are fighting for the championship."

Given his recent record at his home track, Massa has every reason to bang the drum for his side of the Ferrari garage.

He has started his last three races at Interlagos on pole. He has won twice and sacrificed another certain victory in 2007 to allow former team-mate Kimi Raikkonen through to become world champion ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who was then at McLaren.

Last year, he did not race here as he was still recovering from the accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix in which he fractured his skull.

But he did attend the race, and waved the chequered flag at Mark Webber, who pulled off a commanding win for Red Bull which then became lost among Jenson Button's championship celebrations.

Massa is not alone in talking up his chances on Sunday.

In the words of a rival team principal very much in the title hunt: "Massa could be the joker this weekend. He's strong here."

But then came the put-down which will be forever aimed in his direction because of that now-infamous team radio message - "Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm you understand?" - during July's German Grand Prix.

"Massa, winning this weekend? No chance! With Alonso going for the title, there can only be one Ferrari winner," said the same source.

Nevertheless, Massa, who claimed that it was his decision to move aside to let his team-mate win in Germany, could find himself a key player.

The furore over Ferrari's team orders at Hockenheim - the sport's biggest headline story of the season, with a review of the ban pending at the end of the year - has given an extra edge to this dramatic five-way title contest.

If Massa turns in a strong front-running performance here, that could force some tough calls on the team bosses at Red Bull and McLaren, who still have both their drivers in the championship mix.

After Mark Webber's spiky rebuke to Red Bull over a perceived lack of equal treatment with Sebastian Vettel, that pit-wall group will certainly be one to watch.

For Ferrari, with only Alonso in contention, there's one less complication - and a simple strategy to follow.

If Massa is in a position to help the team achieve their goal - Alonso becoming world champion - they expect him to do so. Remember, Alonso is the only driver who can wrap up the title on Sunday.

With Alonso joining the team for 2010, Ferrari chose to keep faith with Massa despite uncertainty over his recovery from his accident and instead to pay off Raikkonen a year before his contract expired. Massa will be expected to repay that loyalty.

Massa himself was quick to remind the media on Thursday about how he had served the team interest here by helping the Finn to the title three years ago.

How he executes any repeat manoeuvre this year - with the furore over team orders still in the forefront of everyone's minds, and in front of a home crowd angered by his subservience in Germany - remains to be seen.

But the more immediate question is whether Massa will be competitive enough to play his supporting role this weekend.

Are we going to see the Massa who out-qualified Alonso in Turkey and Belgium and who launched himself so decisively into the lead from row two at Hockenheim?

Or will he produce another like at the last race in Korea, where the gap to his team-mate was little short of a second, the biggest of the year?

I understand that Massa's race engineer, Rob Smedley, with whom he has such a strong partnership, was so frustrated by his driver's efforts in Korean qualifying that he let him stew overnight before discussing the session or race strategy.

That cold shoulder treatment apparently had the desired impact on race day, when Massa did not put a wheel wrong in the tricky wet conditions.

As you will see in the interviews with the pair in the BBC One qualifying show on Saturday, Massa draws great strength from Smedley's expertise.

"He's always telling me things I need to do, he knows what I'm thinking," reveals Massa.
"He can make me drive faster."

Sir Jackie Stewart, who rated Massa's drives last year before his accident as his best, believes the 29-year-old has yet to come to terms with Alonso's superiority within the team and the fall-out from Hockenheim.

"I have to believe that Alonso went to Ferrari as number one, either written or agreed," he said.

"That result in Germany was a huge disappointment. But I suspect Alonso would have driven away anyway if he'd got past because he'd been quicker all weekend.

"And Massa will continue to lose out if his own performance is not good enough."

That view holds water among some within Ferrari who feel that Massa has not done himself justice this season because he has been unsettled by Alonso's pace.
The Spaniard has been consistently faster in qualifying, with his average advantage slightly more than 0.3 seconds.

There was friction between the pair after the Australian Grand Prix when Alonso felt Massa had cost him victory by needlessly holding him up. And that culminated in Massa's blatant switch of positions in Germany.

If the Brazilian is going to redeem himself in the eyes of his public, he will need better reliability than he had in second practice today when his car stopped on the track with a gearbox problem. It cost him almost half an hour's running time.

Because of his extensive experience of this track, that may not prove as damaging as Red Bull's early demonstration of impressive performance.

Ferrari and McLaren typically come on stronger in races, and their extra speed down the two long straights could counter Red Bull's pace through the in-field section of this bowl-like circuit.

But if Massa's confidence is stuttering and the conditions are unpredictable - heavy rain, like last year, is forecast for qualifying - he may find himself playing catch-up on the title contenders he's meant to be beating. Just like he has done all year.

And despite those best intentions, his team-mate will be left to take the fight to the front on his own.

Jimmie Johnson in Unfamiliar Position With Two Races to Go

You don't win an unprecedented four consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships without being calm, cool and collected. And competitive.

And Jimmie Johnson's two championship challengers are about to find out just how competitive the four-time champ can be.

For the first time since he started piling up the titles in 2006, Johnson is trailing in the standings with two races remaining in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Denny Hamlin swiped the championship lead last week with a win at Texas Motor Speedway and now holds a 33-point advantage on Johnson and 59 on Kevin Harvick.

Johnson couldn't be more blunt in his assessment.

"It sucks,'' Johnson said. "I don't want to be there (in second).''

It's an unfamiliar and unwelcome position for Johnson, but not insurmountable. As he reminded reporters Friday before qualifying at Phoenix International Raceway, no two championship runs are ever the same.

Travis Pastrana, X Games Star, NASCAR-Bound

X Games superstar Travis Pastrana will compete in seven NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2011 thanks to a joint venture with two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip, the two announced Thursday afternoon.

Pastrana, a 16-time X Games gold medalist and legendary supercross and motocross rider, has partnered -- along with Gary and Blake Bechtel -- in the creation of Pastrana-Waltrip Racing. The team hopes to increase Pastrana's schedule to 20 Nationwide races in 2012. The team has not said when Pastrana will make his debut.

"I've been following NASCAR closely for years as a fan of the sport, with competing in the sport a life-long dream,'' Pastrana said. "I decided it was time to try and turn that dream into reality.''

"Travis has built an enormous and unique following all over the world,'' Waltrip said. "As a race team owner, we are always looking for ways to deliver to our partners and engage our fans better.

"This is an opportunity to showcase our company and our sport to a new generation of young fans. We're also looking for that next big star. Travis already is one and action sports is full of talented athletes."

NASCAR Tracks the Atlanta Motor Speedway

The Atlanta Motor Speedway is in Hampton, Georgia (a suburb of Atlanta) and has a 1.54-mile oval track with turns banking at 24 degrees. Because these banks and their smooth surface, car speeds have been known to reach 190 mph on occasion. However these sustained high-throttle speeds make it hard on engines at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. You will see a variety of action here as cars will race closely side-by-side along with a lot of pushing and cutting off. All this action at the Atlanta Motor Speedway is made even more exciting by the high speeds.

The Atlanta Speedway offers a variety of options to see the races from premier seating to facilities for camping. The raceways premier seating is the Club One option. Fans purchasing this seating option sit in a location with a great view on top of the Winners Grandstand. It has 65 video screens along with a first-class bar and menu. Probably one of the most exciting features of Club One is the fans get a pre-race pit stop pass.

Sebastian Vettel grabbed pole position for the second year in a row at Silverstone, as the Milton Keynes-based team secured its fifth front-row lockout of the season. Vettel beat his team mate Mark Webber by 0.143s. Fernando Alonso will start tomorrow's race on second row of the grid for Ferrari.

Jenson Button in his McLaren had a disastrous session. He will start his home grand prix from 14th place after missing the cut for the top-10 shootout.

In Q1

Heikki Kovalainen was the best of the new team drivers in 19th. His Lotus team mate Jarno Trulli will start from 21st position. Seems like the Virgins have made a step forward with the new updates as Timo Glock managed to split the two Lotuses.

Sakon Yamamoto who will take the place of Bruno Senna in HRT for the British Gran Prix, was last of all. He was half a second down on his team mate Karun Chandhok.

Driver from the established team unable to get into Q2 was Jaime Alguersuari who qualified 18th.

In Q2

Local hero, Jenson Button could only manage 14th fastest time in his McLaren. Button radioed in that he was struggling with low grip at the rear.

McLaren was on the back foot going into qualifying after having to shelve the exhaust-blown diffuser it tried in Friday practice, which it found upset the MP4-25?s balance. Thus the team abandoned the key element of its planned car upgrade and reverted to the old specification rear end on the MP4-25.

Somewhat bewildered by the sudden downturn in performance Button said, ?This morning the car felt really good. I personally think there?s something wrong, the car was undriveable. That?s it really. I don?t know if I?ve lost rear downforce since this morning, but it?s pretty undriveable. This weekend has been tricky, but that wasn?t normal.?

Also failing to make it beyond Q2 was Adrian Sutil who has for most part been a regular in the final Q3 shootout, but alas not at Silverstone on the doorstep of the Force India team?s headquarters. His team mate Vitantonio Liuzzi fared worse and will start from 15th on the grid.

Vettel was quicker in the first knockout session while Webber had the edge in Q2.

In Q3

It was the battle of the Bulls for the top position and Vettel got the better of it. This result put Red Bull on pole for the ninth time out of ten Grands Prix this season.

Webber was the first to set a Q3 time and logged a 1m29.758s, easily the fastest lap of the new Silverstone layout up to that point ? but moments later Vettel stopped the clocks in 1m29.695s.

Webber was unable to respond on his second run so Vettel?s pole was secure, but that didn?t stop the young German shaving another few hundredths off his own benchmark just to emphasise who had the upper hand.

His final time of 1m29.615s represented an average speed of 147mph for the revised 3.7-mile circuit, almost identical to the average he recorded on the previous layout in last year?s low-fuel Q2 session.

Fernando Alonso finished third for Ferrari and will share second row of the grid with his nemesis Lewis Hamilton.

Pedro de la Rosa qualified an excellent ninth, his first top-10 grid placing of his F1 comeback season. He qualified ahead of Mercedes' Michael Schumacher.

Only a mishap (such as a broken nosecone which Sebastian Vettel suffered in practice) is likely to prevent a Red Bull victory

NASCAR Tickets - Rain, Crash Overtake Daytona 500

There was no down-to-the-wire photo finish in NASCAR's Daytona 500 race on Feb. 15, but there was plenty of excitement during the big day, especially for Roush Fenway Racing's Matt Kenseth, who took his first Daytona victory after one incredible back-and-forth display of stock car action. Kenseth was named the winner of Sunday's race at the Daytona International Speedway after the race was called short due to rain after drivers completed 152 of a scheduled 200 laps.
Matt Kenseth started the day at Daytona toward the back of the pack, racing in a backup car due to a crash in Thursday's qualifying race in his usual No. 17 Ford.

Kenseth worked his way up and avoided the massive pileup of the day to take the lead from Elliott Sadler in the final lap of green-flag action, snagging his first Daytona victory and 17th career win in a total of 329 starts. No. 29 Kevin Harvick had a second place finish after Kenseth, while No. 44 A.J. Allmendinger, No. 33 Clint Bowyer and No. 19 Elliott Sadler rounded out the top five of the Daytona 500. No. 6 David Ragan, No. 14 Tony Stewart, No. 55 Michael Waltrip, No. 43 Reed Sorenson and No. 1 Martin Truex Jr. (who led the first lap of the race) finished out the top 10 positions of Sunday's race.

While the Daytona 500 was a great excitement for Matt Kenseth, it was more than disappointing for a number of drivers including Kyle Busch, who had an early departure from the winner's circle after a momentous pileup late in the race left him (and especially his car) down and out. After leading the race for 88 laps, Busch was taken out on lap 124 of the Daytona race thanks to a tiff between Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brian Vickers, in which Vickers blocked a move from Earnhardt and Earnhardt responded with a swift jerk to the right, taking out six cars in the process and leaving Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Robby Gordon, Jamie McMurray, Brian Vickers and Denny Hamlin dispersed all over the track in a cloud of dust. While Kyle Busch's day was shot after his car suffered massive damage from the crash, No. 2 Kurt Busch went on and landed a Top 12 spot in the race at the end of the day. Earnhardt finished in 26th place after getting back on track.

The Daytona 500 was a significant victory for Matt Kenseth, as he sets the precedent for the up-and-coming NASCAR season. The Sprint Series heads next to Southern California's Fontana on Feb. 22 for the Auto Club 500 at the Auto Club Speedway, and Las Vegas, Atlanta, Bristol and Martinsville are all next up to keep NASCAR fans entertained during the month of March. "F1 2010" is an upcoming official game of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship and will include all of the official 12 teams, 24 drivers and 19 circuits from the 2010 season. It will be released in September 2010 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows platforms. Before the opening race of the South Korean Grand Prix in October, players can drive the new Korean International Circuit!

Some of the features of the game have been revealed in the F1 2010 developer videos (below) by Codemasters Studios.

Tracks and Cars


The new video takes viewers behind the scenes at F1 2010 developers, Codemasters Birmingham, and shows how all of the cars and circuits from the exhilarating 2010 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP? have been painstakingly recreated in the game.

To deliver fans the most authentic FORMULA ONE? experience, CAD (Computer Aided Design) data and extensive reference photography has been used to accurately simulate the 19 circuits that will host the 2010 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. Once tracks are created, former FORMULA ONE driver Anthony Davidson, who is working as Technical Consultant on F1 2010, gives his feedback from a driver?s perspective about the look and feel of each circuit in-game.

?Driving the real world circuits enables me to give that impression to the guys creating the game,? said Davidson. ?There?s all these details that only a driver would know about. For instance, turn eight in Spa; I know straight away any car I have ever driven there always understeers and it?s knowing that kind of detail as a driver that you can get over into the game. The circuits feel really spot on.?

Weather


In the video, the wide ranging effects of weather and their impact in the game are revealed. FORMULA ONE test driver Anthony Davidson explains that although you have some information about the weather at your disposal, how you use that information is crucial: ?The teams know by the radar where the weather is coming from and how long it?s going to last. You?ll be aware of what the weather?s doing roughly, and then you can make your call, just like you would in real life.?

In career mode, F1 2010?s weather system is fully dynamic, mirroring real life conditions which change at any time, whether between sessions or during a session itself. The weather authentically reflects the conditions at each of the 19 GRAND PRIX? locations, meaning rain is unlikely at Abu Dhabi but conditions can be unpredictable at Spa and Silverstone. Presenting a further challenge, players can set the weather conditions and experience the dramatic affect they have on racing in GRAND PRIX, Time Trial and Multiplayer modes.

Handling


Anthony Davidson, who has been embedded into the team, explains the unique ?twitchy? way in which FORMULA ONE cars handle and how this is translated into authentic gameplay. His experience, combined with real world data and feedback from the teams, drivers and tyre manufacturers is enabling the F1 2010 team to bring alive the sensation of being an F1 racing driver like never before. As in real life, aerodynamics plays a pivotal role in racing, and players will feel how cars can corner at extremely high speed yet perform very differently at lower speeds.
