Denny Hamlin Already Looking Toward 2011

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Only 25 laps into Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR season finale, Denny Hamlin realized his day was going to be long, and his hopes of holding off his two championship challengers diminished as the hot South Florida afternoon wore on.

When the green flag dropped, his 15-point championship lead over four-time defending Sprint Cup series champ Jimmie Johnson technically vanished, based on Hamlin's 38th-place starting position compared to Johnson's sixth.

Then on lap 25, Hamlin collided with Greg Biffle, sending Hamlin's No. 11 FedEx Toyota spinning on the infield grass -- an omen for what would come. Tire problems, pit road miscommunication and then an ill-timed caution period late in the race spelled his ultimate doom. The 30-year-old driver finished 14th in the race and became the first driver in NASCAR's seven-year Chase playoff format not to win the title when leading the championship with one race remaining.

"It's tough, trust me, these years don't come by too often in anyone's career,'' said Hamlin, who finished championship runner-up, 39 points behind the newly crowned five-time champion Johnson.

"I was privileged enough to be part of the closest championship in (Chase) history and give it my best effort, but it wasn't enough today. Our car got banged up and we just couldn't overcome it.''

Corporate Sponsorships Aid NASCAR Diversity

Despite the popularity of the sport, NASCAR has often been described by critics as a White man’s sport. With the exception of a few trailblazers, such as ESPN NASCAR analyst and former NBA All-Star Brad Daugherty, most coverage of racing includes very few faces of color or women.

However, NASCAR diversity has been at the top of the sports agenda for the past six seasons as a result of its Drive for Diversity initiative. The program seeks to develop minority and female drivers and crew members and give them the opportunity to compete against established NASCAR talent.

One such individual taking advantage of NASCAR diversity is 19-year-old racing sensation Michael Cherry, who is in his second year in the Drive for Diversity program and recently received sponsorship from Nationwide Insurance.

“It’s an honor to support Michael Cherry as he works his way up in NASCAR,” said Nationwide agent Carlo White. “This sponsorship is a good opportunity for Nationwide to support diversity in racing, and that’s something that is very important to us. Michael is a very promising young racer and will be a great representative of the Nationwide Insurance brand.”

Despite the efforts of Nationwide, NASCAR diversity has become a critical issue since fired NASCAR employee Mauricia Grant filed a $225 million lawsuit against the racing league in 2008, claiming racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

Grant, a Black female, said of her NASCAR experience: “I loved it. It was a great, exciting, adrenaline-filled job where I worked with fast cars and the best drivers in the world. But there was an ongoing daily pattern [of harassment]. It was the nature of the people I worked with, the people who ran it, it trickled down from the top.”

After Grant filed the lawsuit, NASCAR spokesperson Ramsey Poston emphasized the dedication to NASCAR diversity and a zero tolerance policy for any form of harassment. “As an equal opportunity employer, NASCAR is fully committed to the spirit and letter of affirmative action law,” Poston said. And they are optimistic that the Drive for Diversity initiative and Nationwide’s sponsorship of Cherry will accomplish their goals of diversity.

“We’re pleased to see Michael, and promising young drivers like him, earn the opportunity to take their racing careers to the next level,” said Max Siegel, CEO of the managing group in charge of the diversity initiative. “The goal of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity initiative is to create meaningful opportunities for a wide range of drivers to compete in NASCAR. Nationwide Insurance will be a great partner for Michael because they have a proud tradition of supporting NASCAR and diversity in general.”

Cherry, a Valrico, Fla. Native, finished fourth in the point standings during his rookie year in 2008. He will race for the Addis Motorsports at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway. Cherry said, “It’s truly an honor (to) represent Nationwide Insurance. The addition of their sponsorship to our Addis team and the Drive for Diversity initiative really makes this an unbelievable opportunity for me. I definitely plan to make the most of it.”

In addition, the world of auto racing plans to make the most of NASCAR diversity and become a sport everyone can enjoy and celebrate.

NASCAR Tickets -Patrick Mania Seeps into NASCAR

Neither the NASCAR nor IndyCar Series seasons are close to the end of their respective schedules for the year, but for whatever reason a spark has recently exploded concerning Danica Patrick and her almost inevitable crossover from IndyCar to NASCAR. Lured by far more lucrative contracts, exposure and promotional opportunities, Patrick could be looking to make the jump to NASCAR as soon as this season (along with her contract with Andretti-Green Racing) ends, and this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for NASCAR, either.

Patrick's status as a racecar driver has been boosted this year in the IndyCar Series with several top five finishes and even a third-place landing at May's Indy 500, but it is Danica Patrick's noteworthy marketability that keeps her in the running as one of the leading contestants for a sponsor and team in the 2010 racing season with NASCAR.
In a time where the economy has put enormous pressure on the racing circuit, Danica Patrick is still about as close to signing a deal with NASCAR as several of stock car racing's best drivers. GM's recent announcement to cut ties with the Nationwide Series is troubling, and it is predictable that more cuts are coming for next year's Sprint Cup Series, as well.

That said, the Danica factor could help pour money into the league to keep the racing circuit alive, as the racing queen garners more attention than almost any other driver in either NASCAR or the IRL. Still, Patrick acknowledges that winning races is the most important aspect of her career, saying, "I think the most important thing for me is to put myself in a situation where I can win as many races as possible and run up front and be in that competitive situation, because at the end of the day, usually the best press comes when I'm doing things on the track. That's really the most important thing for me as a driver.

So that's where the ultimate focus is going to go." The IndyCar princess didn't deny her marketability, however, going on to say, "Then aside from that and after that there has to be thoughts to the brand side of the situation, and being able to make the most of myself as an athlete and as an endorser of products and gaining exposure so that in due time I'm able to explore other things outside of racing. So, all of that comes afterwards. The most important thing is kicking butt out there."

The very fact that Danica Patrick is willing to publicly announce that she's thinking about the lure of NASCAR could either mean that she is indeed seriously considering an upcoming career with NASCAR or that she's trying to get more money out of Andretti-Green Racing, as her contract with the team is up at the end of this season. No matter if she ends up with NASCAR or IndyCar next season, the one thing for sure is that her price tag will be expensive.

Does any NASCAR team have the funds to cut a deal with Patrick? And does Danica Patrick even want to make the switch to NASCAR? Time is sure to tell, but NASCAR tickets will always be available, with or without racing's golden girl in the mix. To get tickets to an upcoming race, go online today.

NASCAR Tickets - Eury Under Fire

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. hasn't had the blowout racing season he's hoped for so far this year, but is his crew chief (and cousin) Tony Eury, Jr. to blame for his mediocrity on the track? While much of the NASCAR realm is ready to dismiss Eury from the pit after Earnhardt's tediously slow start on the season (in 35th place for points after the first two Sprint Cup races of the year) Earnhardt isn't quite ready to give up on Eury yet, and neither is Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick. The future of Tony Eury, Jr. is questionable as his experience with motorsports is slowly being surpassed by the engineers who are now taking over as NASCAR crew chiefs, but it seems as if, even for just right now, Eury's job is safe.

Rick Hendrick recently addressed the media on the Eury situation, displaying his confidence in Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s cousin and crew chief by saying, "I have no intention of making any changes. I have all intentions of making it better. These guys are working their butts off... and I have to believe in the next few weeks we're going to see some real success out of that crowd. My philosophy is you tweak it and inch forward before you cut it apart and completely rebuild it. I see a lot of effort from everybody on the team."

True, over these last few weeks following a disastrous start to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season the No. 88 National Guard Chevy has done a terrific job of playing catch-up, as Dale Jr. is now ranked 19th in the league after a solid 10th place finish at Las Vegas, an 11th place finish in Atlanta and 14th place finish at Bristol, but are these consistent finishes enough to give the Dale Jr. team the boost of confidence it needs to get back into the pit and keep going? Rick Hendrick sure hopes so, as this struggling Hendrick Motorsports team needs to pound out some better performances even than Earnhardt had last month in Las Vegas if it wants to stay toward the top.

Hendrick is willing to see out this driver-crew chief melee of the Juniors, and this could be in part because of a similar situation that occurred last year between Jeff Gordon and his crew chief Steve Letarte. Gordon's No. 24 Chevy went win-less last season and, as Hendrick recalled, "Everybody was saying, 'You need to replace Stevie and you need to do something because they aren't running [well].' Last year at this time, the No. 88 [Earnhardt] was the best team we had in the complex and they were the ones leading the charge." The Gordon team this year currently sits at number one in series standings, and the hope is for the Earnhardt team to work out the kinks, as well, putting Hendrick Motorsports back on top of the NASCAR circuit.

While Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Tony Eury, Jr. continue working things out, fans with NASCAR tickets will still be able to watch No. 88 go for his first win of the season. Racing tickets are always available online, so make sure you don't miss Dale Jr.'s hopeful comeback!

The NASCAR Coca Cola 600 Race: Everything You Need to Know to Have the Time of Your Life

NASCAR is one of the most well enjoyed of the American pastimes, and for good reason. While many people have heard of the NASCAR Daytona 500 race, there are other races to attend as well—many of them just as popular as the Daytona 500 itself. One of these races is the Coca Cola 600, a 600 mile race held at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC the weekend of Memorial Day. This is a stock car race, one of the things that attracts die hard fans of NASCAR stock car racing from all around the world. As a matter of fact, this race falls into the top five of all of the NASCAR races put together, something that is rather high honors in the racing world. The hotels in the area fill up in one to two nights; the camp grounds are reserved well in advance and packed to the brim with enthusiastic campers and racing fans.

A Bit of History on the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 Race

Like every other true NASCAR race, the Coca Cola 600 does have some history behind it. It has gone through several name changes, from the World 600 to the Coca Cola or Coke 600. From there it was changed to the Coca Cola Racing Family 600, and then was put back to the near original Coca Cola 600.

This race was designed to offset some of the popularity that the Indian 500 race was experiencing, and it succeeded in doing so. To date, the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 race has better television ratings and a higher viewership on television than the Indianapolis 500. These races occur on the same weekend of Memorial Day, making it prime time for true racing fans across the world. The races have even been scheduled in a way that allows fans to make it from the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 to the Indianapolis 500 and be able to participate in both races, something that wasn't made clear if it would be possible in the beginning. Nowadays, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca Cola 600 are held on the same day. Of course, this makes a problem for some drivers who are not able to do over 1000 miles in one day, but those who have the grit and are determined to be successful have been known to do both races with ease, leaving the first race to make it to the second just in time.

Camping at the NASCAR Coca Cola 600

One of the best things about the time when the Coca Cola 600 rolls around is that it gives die hard NASCAR fans a chance to get in one place together and cut up. This can include anything, from drinking to games and other activities. Music, friends, fun—this is the type of thing that a successful NASCAR campout consists of. If you have never partaken in NASCAR camping before, the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 is a great place to start. Although the weather tends to be a little warm and sticky, those who have RVs should not have much of a problem dealing with the heat.

There are many different ways to camp out at this race. RVs with a hookup is obviously the most effective and pleasurable way to go about camping at a race like that. There are other ways to go about it as well, like RV camping without the hook up and even tent camping. Depending on what your camping style is there are many ways to enjoy the race, some of them even from the infield.

Of course, the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 is one of the most popular races on the NASCAR schedule, so reservations for camping spots anywhere even close to the infield are going to be in high demand. Make your reservations as early as possible to avoid disappointment as these things tend to fill up very fast. If you are excited about the event, think about the thousands and thousands of others who are excited about it as well.

The Coca Cola 600 is a huge event for racing fans all over. It is one of the hottest commodities on the NASCAR 600 schedule. It draws fans from all over the globe to the hot Carolinas and even more to their television sets, glued to the screen for lap after lap of NASCAR fun.
