After a 47-race drought that left Jeff Gordon thirsty as ever for a Sprint Cup victory, the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports stock car driver finally picked up his first win of the season in yesterday's Samsung 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway, breaking his lengthy winless streak and securing his spot in first place in the current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings. Gordon's big win at Texas was his very first at the racetrack, and it gives this 37-year-old National Guard driver something to brag about in the current racing season.

Gordon took the tricky Texas racetrack by storm in yesterday's race and beat out Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton and Carl Edwards, respectively, giving him a 162-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the Sprint Cup series. This year's Samsung 500 gave Gordon his first win in 47 tries, but it also granted the NASCAR hero his first-ever win at Texas Motor Speedway. Gordon made a statement after winning the race yesterday, saying, "How ironic is this that when we go into this streak and we end it here in Texas, a place that's just eluded us for so long. Incredible team effort. This whole year has been amazing. What a great car. I've never had a car like this at Texas. We finally had one and put it in position."

Now that he's won a race at Texas, Gordon has but one racetrack in the Sprint Cup circuit that he has yet to emerge victorious from, and that's the Homestead Miami Speedway. In his long and incredibly successful NASCAR career so far, Gordon has won at both Darlington and Martinsville seven times, Daytona and Talladega six times, Bristol, Charlotte and Sonoma five times, Atlanta, Dover, Indianapolis, Pocono and West Glen four times, Fontana and New Hampshire three times, Kansas, Michigan and Richmond twice and Chicago, Las Vegas, Phoenix and (now) Texas once.

Jeff Gordon grew up in Northern California and was very familiar with the nearby Vallejo Speedway, which inspired the youngster to take up racecar driving at a young age. Gordon received a Quarter Midget racecar when he was five years old, winning his first race at age eight. In 1986, Gordon and his family moved to Indianapolis, where he started racing open wheel cars and quickly turned heads in the racing business. Jeff Gordon started racing in the NASCAR circuit when he jumped aboard Hendrick Motorsports in 1992, taking 14th place in series standings in 1993 and not looking back since.

Gordon has been a consistent top finisher at Sprint Cup races over the last two decades, and 2009 has been nothing but successful so far for No. 24. He was already the season points leader coming into yesterday's race, as his four top-five finishes so far in the series' first six races put him atop the Sprint Cup Series standings even before the Texas race. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Tickets - Drivers Confident in GM Despite Troubles

Automobile giant General Motors announced last week that it may be filing for bankruptcy in order to stay in business, and while this is big news for all Chevrolet drivers in the NASCAR circuits, it doesn't necessarily mean doomsday is rapidly approaching for the racing world's top drivers. GM has already received billions of dollars in aid from the government but is still shaky when it comes to the company's future, sparking premature speculation that NASCAR is destined to follow suit.

With all this uncertainty looming, however, NASCAR drivers are coming out of the woodwork to voice their opinions on the current economic situation and especially on GM's role with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sprint Cup's No. 31 Caterpillar Chevy driver Jeff Burton recently made a statement with the USA Today concerning his views on the situation, saying, "My biggest concern as it relates to Chevrolet is freeing up credit and giving people the security that they want to buy a car, that they have a job. We can talk about Chevrolet but the real key is what is the overall economy? Chevrolet has shown for years that they're very committed to racing and that commitment is not going to go away."

Another Chevrolet driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is Kevin Harvick, the driver of the No. 29 Pennzoil car. Harvick backed up Burton's stance on his unwavering support for GM, recently stating "obviously, they are going through tough times, but they are in a wonderful restructuring process right now of putting their company back on their feet. I think when the economy turns they're going to be as good as they have ever been going forward. We're all here to support them."

Just as NASCAR's Chevy drivers like Burton and Harvick are calling for the support of General Motors as the automaker tries to uplift its current downward spiral, GM has also upheld the sponsorships it has with NASCAR so far. 12 Sprint Cup drivers including Burton, Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Mark Martin, Casey Mears, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon are all under the sponsorship of Chevrolet, and these top notch drivers aren't soon to be relinquishing their cars or titles for any reason. In the case that GM did file bankruptcy, a court of law wouldn't automatically cancel these sponsorships and other marketing activities because the publicity is good for the company, meaning that the contracts that these NASCAR drivers currently have with Chevy wouldn't necessarily be void should GM file for bankruptcy.

While economic turmoil and financial crises seem to be the talk of the town for now, the one thing that is for sure is that the show must go on. Why the NASCAR Foundation Organization Supports Charity

A good organization supports charity and NASCAR does just that through its NASCAR foundation. The foundation has a program where for a 30 dollar donation you can join in on the NASCAR track walk. The Home Depot, one of the nations largest retail home improvement centers, is a major sponsor of the promotions and holds charitable events with proceeds going to the Foundation. But who does the Foundation support and what kinds of events do they hold to raise funds?

One thing they do is sponsor auctions where the proceeds go to one of the foundations supported by the foundation. For example, on September 17, 2007, they announced bidding on Jeff Gordon full-sized and autographed fiberglass auto body. The proceeds from this auction go to the Jeff Gordon Foundation which supports pediatric medical care of children with serious and life-threatening disease.

The NASCAR foundation holds the Blood and Marrow Drives at different tracks each year. The donations help out the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and the Hendrick Marrow Program. Other charities of the Foundation are:

Victory Junction Gang Camp,This is an organization with the mission of helping to enrich the lives of children with serious illnesses by providing them a camping experience in a medically-safe environment. It was founded by Kyle Petty and his wife Pattie in June 2004. The couple also donated the land that the camp stands on today. The camp is interesting because it was built with a racing theme and all the look of a race track. The camp takes cash donations and there are volunteer opportunities. It is also gives a quilt and a teddy bear to each child who stays there so they are always looking for donations of these two items to replenish their supply.

There are many ways to donate to the foundation. One way is through the NASCARs Auto Donation program. Here, you can donate a vehicle and then any of the proceeds that the Auto Donation program gets from the proceeds in an auction are given to charity. All donations are fully tax deductible.

The Day Telethon,This was a telethon held on May 18, 2007 across from Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Speed Channel, NASCAR, and Sirius radio broadcasted this telethon event through the end of the Craftsman Truck Series Race.

NASCAR Tickets - Jimmy Watts' Big Mistake

Jimmy Watts might just be the most famous NASCAR crew member of the year, but that doesn't necessarily mean good things for the crew team of Marcos Ambrose and his No. 47 stock car. Watts made national headlines last week after he chased a runaway tire onto the racetrack at the Atlanta Motor Speedway during the Kobalt Tools 500, shocking everyone with NASCAR tickets and violating one of the league's biggest rules while also causing NASCAR to throw out the third caution flag on lap 67 of the race. This huge error in judgment was undoubtedly an instant reaction (and a regrettable one, at that) by Watts, and this gasman will be forced to live with the consequences of his knee-jerk reaction for the rest of this racing season.

When Jimmy Watts went onto the racetrack at Atlanta, he violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 9-15-U (crew members cannot for any reason go onto the racetrack while cars or racing or running under the yellow or red flag, unless a NASCAR official directs the action) of NASCAR code, triggering a four-race suspension and a nine-month probationary period while also penalizing his crew chief, Frank Kerr. Kerr, the chief of Ambrose's No. 47 Toyota, also got slapped with a hefty fine and was placed on NASCAR probation until December 31 for violating Sections 12-1 and 9-4-A (crew chief assumes responsibility for his team members' actions).

Watts works as a fireman while he's not in the pit for Marcos Ambrose's team, and his automatic reaction to chase after the tire could be a result of his instinctive job and intense firefighting training. The gasman did offer an apology to NASCAR after the race, saying, "Everything happened so fast on pit road that I just didn't realize how far I had to go out until I grabbed the tire. I put myself in jeopardy and I know how hard NASCAR works to make the pit crew members safe on pit road. I stand by their decision and will serve my four-race suspension."

The caution flag that resulted from Watts stepping foot onto the racetrack at the Atlanta Motor Speedway may have had an effect on the race's outcome, as NASCAR officials would have waited for the green flag stops to cycle out before calling a caution had Watts not chased after the tire, keeping all the cars on pit sequence. Instead, however, the caution flag went up, and some of the Sprint Cup drivers are not pleased with the results. Matt Kenseth recently made a seething comment about the incident, saying, "Maybe he's new. Maybe he hasn't seen us drive, but we tend to wreck a lot. I wouldn't want to be out in the middle of the grass."

What's done is done, however, and Watts will have to come back from his four-race suspension at the end of April and prove that his talents outweigh his one big mistake. In the meantime, the racing will continue, and tickets to NASCAR races are always available online.

Lotus v Lotus

I'll make this as simple as possible.

There will be two teams bearing the Lotus name in Formula 1 next year.

One, following Wednesday's announcement of Lotus Cars' decision to sponsor and eventually buy into what was the Renault team, will be called Lotus Renault. That team will be part-owned by Lotus Cars but their F1 cars will be called Renaults and will use Renault engines.

The other will be called Team Lotus. This one has nothing to do with Lotus Cars (any more - but we'll come back to that in a moment) but their F1 car will be called a Lotus. They will also use, er, Renault engines.

Both teams, it transpires, plan to run their cars in variations of a black and gold livery. This is an attempt to hark back to the historic John Player Special livery made famous by the original Team Lotus in the 1970s and 1980s through great drivers such as Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Ronnie Peterson, Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna, and era-defining cars like the Lotus 72 and 79.

It's a commentator's - and journalist's - nightmare and one can only begin to imagine the confusion it will create for those watching.

So what on earth is going on?

The story starts in 2009, when Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes obtained a multi-year licence from Lotus Cars to use the Lotus name in F1, having persuaded the Malaysian-owned company that an involvement in grand prix racing would be a valuable promotional tool.

Lotus Racing were one of three new teams in F1 in 2010, the others being Virgin and Hispania. All three spent the year close to the back of the grid, but Lotus did establish themselves as convincingly the most competitive.

In the course of the year, though, Group Lotus's approach to F1 changed, as part of a hugely ambitious refocusing of the company's future plans by chief executive officer Dany Bahar, who formerly worked in the commercial arms of Red Bull F1 and Ferrari.

Bahar, it transpires, was never keen on Lotus granting the licence to Fernandes, and it has become clear through 2010 why - he wanted to take the brand into F1 himself, but in a different way, through an involvement with an established team.

At the Paris Motor Show in October, Bahar announced plans for five new road-car models, expanding Lotus's range by nearly 200%, and has since said Lotus will enter IndyCar racing in the US and race at Le Mans. And now comes a major sponsorship deal with what used to be the Renault F1 team which will, at an undefined point in the future, morph into Lotus part-owning that team.

Fernandes, meanwhile, struck a deal in September to buy the rights to the Team Lotus name from David Hunt, brother of 1976 world champion James. Hunt had bought them when the original Team Lotus collapsed in 1994 after racing in F1 since 1958, during which time it had established itself as one of the sport's most iconic names.

Fernandes' success in buying the name - exclusively revealed by BBC Sport - marked the point at which what had until then been a private dispute between him and Lotus Cars - which is owned by the Malaysian company Proton - broke out into the open.

Following Fernandes's acquisition of the Team Lotus name, Group Lotus claimed that it owned all the rights to the Lotus name - a point of view robustly disputed by Hunt, who points out that Proton have several times tried to buy the Team Lotus name from him without ever being able to conclude a deal.

The dispute got so heated that former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir bin Mohamad stepped in to mediate, but he succeeded only in stopping the ping-pong of press releases. The dispute is now going to the High Court - and it is unlikely to be resolved until next year.

But the disagreement over the ownership of Team Lotus is only one of two ongoing legal cases between Lotus Cars and Fernandes. In the other, Fernandes is suing Lotus Cars for breach of contract over its withdrawal of the licence to use the Lotus name in F1.

That, too, is not expected to be resolved until some time next year.

Both sides, then, have got themselves into a bit of a pickle.

Lotus Cars has struck a deal to promote its brand in F1 through a team that is knocking on the door of breaking into the top three - and which, in Robert Kubica, has one of the finest drivers on the grid.

But it is doing so with a car that is called a Renault - and there is no way out of that one.

Lotus and the team's majority shareholder, the private investment group Genii Capital, cannot change the constructor name assigned to their team because if they do so without the permission of all the other teams they will lose the millions the team earns through Renault's historic achievements in F1, which date back to their entry in 1977.

And guess which team would not agree?

Fernandes, meanwhile, faces the prospect of his team giving free publicity to a company with which he is in two separate legal disputes. And even if he changed the name of the team to something else, his cars would still be called Lotuses.

It is an unsatisfactory situation for all involved - the efforts of both parties will be diluted by a dispute that, for those watching, will create only confusion.

Fernandes is understood to be increasingly confident that he will win the court case over the Team Lotus name. Lotus Cars, for its part, appears not to be overly concerned about the existence of a second team diluting its brand. Their view is that only one of the teams is affiliated with Lotus, and the other one is providing free advertising for it.

In the meantime, questions hang in the air.

Is the end game for Fernandes to sell the Team Lotus brand to Lotus Cars if he succeeds in establishing that he owns it? Can Lotus - and its parent company Proton - sustain such an ambitious programme? And so on.

In the murk, only one thing seems clear - this is only the latest stage in a story that will rumble on for some time to come.
