Whoever thought that the current economic turmoil would leave the grandstands empty at sporting events didn't consider NASCAR's dedicated fan base. Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee is one of stock car racing's most coveted racetracks, and last week's Food City 500 set a track record, but it wasn't the racecar drivers breaking precedents. For the 54th consecutive event in a row, the half-mile speedway sold out tickets to the track for a race, filling up all 160,000 seats in the stadium with racing enthusiasts set to cheer on their favorite NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitors like Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth. While the Bristol Motor Speedway has sold out tickets to the Food City 500 every year since 1982, this year the track and its employees had to work extra hard to turn out tickets to fans, as several corporate sponsors had handed their tickets back in during this economic recession. Bristol nonetheless accomplished this task, letting the tradition live on this year at the Tennessee track. The Food City 500 was also the second race of this NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season to sell out, following in the footsteps of the season opener at the Daytona 500.

At last weekend's Food City 500 race, the sold-out crowd at Bristol Motor Speedway watched anxiously as Kyle Busch zoomed his way to another Cup Series victory, yanking his second win of the season (after Las Vegas earlier this month) and also his second career win at what is dubbed "the world's fastest half-mile." Busch held off Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne (respectively) to whiz down Victory Lane in first place, using all the help he could get from his pit crew to propel him to the top of the NASCAR race. Busch almost lost his race-leading edge after a late pit stop in last week's Food City race, but after communicating with his pit crew, Busch said that, "I told the ladies to man up, and they got it done on the next stop. It is pretty awesome to win here. I should have won last fall here. We've had great cars, we just keep ruining it on pit road."

Kyle Busch now sits in fourth place overall in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, loosening the grip Jeff Gordon has over the league in points and climbing three spots from the last race. Gordon is still in first place in standings after finishing fourth at Bristol, sitting pretty with 794 total points while Kurt Busch has 718, Clint Bowyer has 715, Kyle Busch has 709 and Carl Edwards has 665. A year ago, Danica Patrick was in Japan, recording the first victory by a woman in an Indy Racing League event. This weekend, she will be outside of Los Angeles, driving in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Her contract with Andretti Green is about to expire and many American's are often scratching their heads, wondering where the beautiful woman will be in a year from now? Many will recall Patrick turned the esteemed Indianapolis 500 upside down in 2005, by leading the race for 19 laps and finishing in fourth place. Since then, she has been one of the most recognizable faces for the I.R.L. But many are wondering if she will remain in the open-wheel world of I.R.L. or will the young lady change her scenery and move on to NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series? The Chairman added that since sixty percent of the NASCAR crowd is male and once they find out a pretty woman owns the track, she will be a ticket-selling machine.

Can you picture Patrick zooming alongside NASCAR superstars Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr.? That alone would increase the sport's popularity by a wide margin. That combined with the fact that she is well known and well liked would certainly provide the sport with a deep level of marketing impact. If Danica decides to pursues NASCAR there is no question that it will be one of the biggest stories of the year, producing a ton of media coverage, which will generate consumer and fan engagement as well as corporate attention. However, appeal does not guarantee success. Juan Pablo, Sam Hornish, and Dario Franchitti were top drivers in the I.R.L. who struggled once they made the move to NASCAR.

There are plenty of fans who believe Danica would be best served taking the best I.R.L. deal. Eddie Gossage, the president of Texas Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR and I.R.L. events expressed concern over Patrick moving to NASCAR. He added that he would love to hand her the winner's trophy at an I.R.L. race. Gossage believes she is arguably one of the two or three best-known female athletes in the world. So what does Danica want? She has reported to the media that business considerations would play a part in where she drives in 2010. The driver also ruled out Formula One as an unlikely option for her since she doesn't want to travel the world. The one main concern about going to NASCAR that worries her is that the Sprint Cup schedule is a grueling 36 races while the I.R.L.'s is only 18.

NASCAR Tickets - Stewart Makes History as Million Dollar Man

It was supposed to be Jeff Gordon's record-breaking race. He set himself up for the victory of a lifetime, attempting to break a tie with Dale Earnhardt as the first driver ever to win the Sprint Cup All-Star Race for the fourth time. In Saturday night's big event, Gordon was in first place after the third segment of the race at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

All that was left was a 10-lap shootout to close out the $1 million deal, but just when it seemed that Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet was golden, attackers Kyle Busch and Ryan Newman came around both sides of the car, causing Gordon to spin out and crash nose-first into the outside wall, ending his first-place reign.

Instead of Gordon making history in Saturday night's All-Star Race, the NASCAR driver who put his name in the books was Tony Stewart, the near 38-year-old who won his very first All-Star Race and became the second driver in NASCAR history to win the race as a driver/owner, following suit of 1994's All-Star winner Geoff Bodine. Stewart zoomed into Victory Lane after passing Matt Kenseth in Turn 2 of Lap 99 (of 100) in the race, making a comment after the race about Kenseth letting him pass, saying, "I can't believe he gave me the bottom. I just cannot believe he gave me the bottom. But I'll take it. Matt is a guy you can trust. We got to second there, got by the No. 18 [Kyle Busch] and I thought, 'All right, we have a shot at this thing.'"

Stewart went on to elaborate about the state of his car, which got a last minute fix-up, saying, "We weren't that good until the last run. [Crew chief] Darien Grubb, I mean he made some awesome calls there at the end to get us where I could drive that thing the way I could. Man, it was fast."

The Sprint Cup All-Star Race ended with Stewart snagging first place honors, with Matt Kenseth in second, Kurt Busch in third, Denny Hamlin in fourth and Carl Edwards in fifth place. Stewart's big win was his first of the season, though he currently sits in second place in NASCAR Sprint Cup driver standings (as of the Darlington race). Last weekend's All-Star race also marked the first win for No. 14 under his newly-minted and owned team Stewart-Haas Racing, which he helped jumpstart in 2009.

Stewart, who was born in Columbus, Indiana, grew up in the racing capital of the country, starting out on go karts and even winning a World Karting Association championship in 1987. The aspiring driver tried his hand with IndyCars in the early '90s and eventually made the switch to stock cars after burning rubber in the IRL and even earning the nickname 'Smoke,' joining the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 1999 for Joe Gibbs Racing. In his first NASCAR season, Stewart took home Rookie of the Year honors, also finishing fourth in the series and winning races at Richmond, Phoenix and Homestead, becoming the first series rookie to take wins at three Sprint Cup races.

Since then, the name Tony Stewart has been ringing loud and true in the NASCAR circuit, and No. 14 has posted several big wins over the years, winning the Sprint Cup Championship in both 2002 and 2005. In 2009, Stewart left Joe Gibbs Racing to start his own team, Stewart-Haas Racing, and has since been just as consistent as ever.

Now that he's won his first race of the season (albeit not one for points) Tony Stewart is raring and ready to go. Is NASCAR Racing Boring?

It seems like the most common complaint, at least the most common one that I have heard from family and friends, is the NASCAR is boring. They complain that all it is a bunch of guys in their cars driving around in circles. Well, I guess these people just do not et it like a true NASCAR fan would. A true NASCAR fan sees all the excitement that is in that round track and all the cool things that happen during a NASCAR race.

The main problem could be that they are watching racings on intermediate tracks. What happens most of the time on an intermediate track NASCAR race is that all the cars for the most part end up driving in a single lane and only pass from time to time. All the requirements that a driver is looking for in order to pass the car in front of them can take a very long time to reach. The time needed to gain enough momentum to pass the person in front of the driver can drive a non NASCAR fan crazy enough to want to just stop watching.

Some of this could be at the fault of the NASCAR planninger and organizers themselves. Maybe, they should be looking at ways to make the racing more exciting for the viewers. This may even cause some changing of the rules.

Maybe racers need to get more aggressive on the track and bring out more of a wild personality. Heck, they may even want to so the same thing as wrestling and make a whole story behind the whole thing -- well, maybe not, that might be pushing it a bit!

I think that as the racing keeps going this way, you will slowly see even the most die hard NASCAR racing fans looking for more exciting things because they can only look at a car going in circles for so long. However, get these cars drifting, bumping bumbers and doing the like could cause for some great excitement as long as the excitement is not at the expense or to increase the risk of some kind of harm coming to the driver.

So, if you ask if NASCAR racing is boring, I am sure a lot of people would agree to say yes it is. However, just a few minor tweaks and bends and things could turn around and get really exciting for both drivers and the people on the sidelines and watching from home on television.

Nascar Devotion Is Resilient When Change Occurs

There have been many changes to Nascar over the years, but changes are expected by fans and also by driver's who are circling around a racetrack at speeds that exceed 200 miles per hour at times. The driver is an expert at changing speeds and lanes and changing speeds once again to be within the legal limits of those speeds posted on pit row.

Most of the changes in Nascar racing have occurred over time and have been directly related to the high-speed pursuits around million dollar raceways. Some of those changes have been painful ones but the Nascar family has remained strong through each of them. Some of the most violent experiences that occasionally occur at a raceway will no doubt cause some people to rethink their past relationships with sponsors, owners, and family.

The cascading effects of those thoughts might lead drivers to other action and cause them to change their driving commitments and their relationship with the world of Nascar excitement. These changes will in turn, put them on a new career path that is a welcome change but a change that might not be a delight to all fans who do not have a full understanding on why those changes needed to happen.

Some of these changes are due to a repositioning of priorities by a team owner or the change might occur because a driver needs to take a step back and rethink things long enough to begin establishing a new view on self-worth and on the view that commitment to self should take precedence and priority over family persuasion and other control factors. No changes that occur in Nascar should directly impact the drivers ability to keep the commitments that are expected by fans. Fans expect their favorite drivers to give their all to win the race they are in, no matter what team they are driving for that year.

Some changes in Nascar racing can keep that from happening though. In an instant, enthusiasts may have more action than they bargained for when they must see the gut wrenching tragedies unfold in front of them. These tragedies can change people in an instant because the action comes from race cars that inadvertently crash at inopportune moments into the various turns of any raceway. Other drivers are lost while they are enroute to the track.

Fare affected by the change and are committed to remembering those moments many times through the years with reverence. The commitment of fans to Nascar and their driver is what keeps changes from dampening the endearing spirit of the crowds. There is one change that will never occur. The fans will always be there on race day and every day after in some small way.
